Feeling adrift, rejected, and persecuted, they wandered alone, each searching for a community of like-minded white outsiders to call their own. He longed for a woman who would obey him without question; she longed for a man who would demand nothing less. They clung to the certainty that they had been chosen, convinced that God Himself had entrusted them with a sacred mission. Between them, they could recite whole passages of the Old Testament from memory, each verse hardening their conviction and silencing every doubt. Blindly they crossed a leaching, chemical-saturated wasteland where neither trees nor grass had survived. The earth seemed flayed open, its poisoned soil weeping through cracked ground. Bleached stumps jutted from the landscape like broken teeth, while rotting logs lay half-buried as though they had sunk there trying to escape. Severed heads stared from the mire with empty eyes, their slack expressions worn smooth by wind and rain until they seemed less like corpses than warnings no one had heeded. Yet the land did not repel them. It seemed to recognize them, to open itself before them, as though the decay surrounding them were merely the outward expression of the darkness they carried within. Their shared devotion to God, self-imposed isolation, racist convictions, and consuming hatred of contemporary society—with its laws and institutions they believed favored people of color over white people—drew them steadily toward one another. Beneath it all lay the same desperate hunger: to belong, to become part of something larger than themselves. The wasteland, vast and indifferent, yielded them to each other at last. Their paths converged. The hopelessly headless wander the world in search of direction, purpose, and acceptance. Believing they have found those things in a powerful and charismatic figure who reflects—and amplifies—their resentment and prejudice, they embrace his message as their own. Many fail to recognize that they are being manipulated to advance his personal ambitions. Their anger is redirected toward those with the least power: immigrants, people of color, women, LGBTQ people, and older adults—groups they are encouraged to believe have taken opportunities that rightfully belonged to them. To sustain the illusion of overwhelming public support, he depends on a large and devoted following, continually recruiting new adherents by stoking fear, resentment, and hostility toward these vulnerable communities. The sewer system is our unseen, underground network for collecting and disposing of waste. It is where unwanted, abandoned, and often hazardous debris from the world above accumulates before being carried through a vast maze of concrete tunnels. While this infrastructure is essential to modern society, it also reflects a troubling pattern of neglect. Because our waste disappears from view, it becomes easy to discard it without thought or accountability, even though much of it ultimately finds its way into our streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. The irony is striking. We invest tremendous ingenuity, engineering, and planning into building sophisticated sewer systems, yet we are often careless about what we allow to flow through them, contaminating the very waterways that provide our drinking water and sustain our environment. "Out of sight, out of mind" has become more than a common expression—it has become a cultural habit, encouraging us to ignore the consequences of our actions once they are hidden from view. This mindset extends far beyond environmental stewardship. It is increasingly evident in other areas of society, where difficult problems are too often concealed instead of honestly confronted and responsibly addressed. Nowhere is this tendency more consequential than in our politics. In the United States, we devote enormous amounts of time, energy, money, and public spectacle to political campaigns and elections, especially those for the presidency. Yet despite the immense importance of the office, we have no widely accepted process for rigorously and truthfully evaluating the character, judgment, integrity, and emotional fitness of those seeking to become the nation's chief executive. Instead, we often rely on optimism—that our democratic institutions, the Constitution, and the system of checks and balances will compensate for any personal shortcomings of the individual elected to the office. That hope may at times be justified, but it is not a substitute for careful scrutiny. Just as neglecting what enters our sewer systems eventually pollutes the waters on which we all depend, neglecting to examine the character of those entrusted with great power can have consequences that spread far beyond any single election. I made this painting soon after the supreme court overturned Roe v. Wade, on June 24, 2022. Their decision severed the constitutional right of women to an abortion, which was a previous long-standing ruling, established in 1973. The court determined that it is no longer a women's personal choice to terminate a pregnancy, giving the state control over her body. The painting is titled 'marker'. A disturbing image of woman's head is separated from her body and the head is placed upon a stump - metaphorically stating that her own thoughts and actions no longer have control over her body, essentially the supreme court’s ruling ‘aborted’ the ability of women to think for themselves. They grow relentlessly, fed by our excess, until they become monuments to a culture unable to contain the consequences of its own appetites. "Turning and turning in the widening gyre"—the opening line of William Yeats's The Second Coming—captures not merely a moment of disorder but the terrifying acceleration of a civilization that has lost its moral center. The image is as haunting today as when it was first written. The widening gyre is no longer only a poetic vision; it is our political reality, our environmental inheritance, our collective conscience made visible. We have entered this widening circle before. History does not repeat itself with mechanical precision, but it returns with familiar rhythms. In times of uncertainty, the promise of the authoritarian is always the same: surrender your freedom, and I will give you order; silence your doubts, and I will give you certainty; abandon your neighbors, and I will restore your greatness. The strongman speaks in absolutes because absolutes are easier than truth. He promises prosperity while demanding obedience, security while cultivating fear, unity while defining ever more enemies to despise. Each lie prepares the ground for the next until deception itself becomes the architecture of power. Yet regimes built upon falsehood carry within themselves the seeds of their own undoing. Power sustained by fear must forever manufacture new fears. Authority founded on deception must endlessly invent new deceptions. Such governments do not merely impoverish those they rule; they hollow out the moral foundations upon which every enduring society depends. They enrich the few, diminish the many, and, like the widening gyres that choke our oceans, continue to gather the refuse of their own corruption until the weight of accumulated falsehood becomes impossible to bear. The gyre is more than a pattern of wind and water. It is the enduring symbol of civilizations that mistake accumulation for progress, power for justice, and domination for strength. Left unchecked, every widening circle eventually reaches the point at which it can no longer sustain itself. Today, climate change and rising sea levels suggest that such a transformative event may no longer belong solely to ancient stories but could become part of our near future. The flood can also be understood as a metaphor. Just as rising waters wash away what can no longer endure, a rising tide of political and social change is needed to sweep away the carelessness, division, and destructive ideas that have poisoned both our society and the land we inhabit. Renewal requires more than repairing what is broken; it demands the courage to discard what has become irredeemable and to build anew on firmer moral and civic foundations. Instead, power has become increasingly concentrated in an authoritarian presidency, raising deep concerns about the future of our democracy. Many assumed that long-established constitutional norms and democratic traditions would continue to guide those in power. It is no longer about survival, but supremacy; not about preserving life, but securing dominance. The desire is to emerge victorious at any cost, to stand above others, to feel powerful while remaining indifferent to who is left behind. In such moments, people often bind themselves to causes that affirm their deepest prejudices and insecurities. They come to believe that they are inherently more deserving than others, entitled to privilege, precedence, and power. This conviction is rooted in arrogance and hubris, in the belief that one's identity alone confers superiority. These impulses find expression in white Christian nationalism. Adherents often view themselves, as white Christians and "true" Americans, as a divinely ordained people whose rightful dominance is under siege. To them, diversity, pluralism, equality, and democratic inclusion are not civic virtues but existential threats. Their worldview is animated by the fear that sharing power is equivalent to losing it. The racism, bigotry, prejudice, and hostility that flow from this ideology are sustained by fear, ignorance, and an intolerance of difference. Some of the paintings are made on cut slabs of wood, with the bark edge intentionally left intact, as though the diminutive worlds depicted within them occupy hollowed-out logs left to decay. In their book, any semblance of human decency is a sign of weakness. The imagination has long ago withered. They become like ancient trees long dead at the core, their bark still standing though life has long since departed. To the distant eye they appear steadfast, even noble. Yet the first true wind reveals what time has concealed. Their branches splinter. Their trunks fracture.
